The Fish Of Maui
Maui Nukurau was born a different individual who had special powers . maui had four foster- brothers named Roto,Mua, Pae and Taka. one day Maui’s brothers decided to go fishing. But they didn’t tell Maui as they were jealous of him. Maui found out and whilst his brothers were all asleep he decided to hide in the bottom of his brothers canoe. The next morning his brothers set of laughing not knowing that Maui was in the boat. The brothers found a good place to fish but Maui was not happy with it. So he jumped up from his hiding place. The brothers were shocked! Then they began to paddle as Maui requested. Maui would not let them stop until they found the perfect place. The sun slowly began to set then came the light of marama the moon. The next morning the brothers became grumpy but Maui was finally satisfied with his fishing spot. His brothers would not give him any bait as utu or revenge. So he cut his own nose with his hook to use as bait.
He whirled the jaw bone of his ancestors around his head. Then he flung it into the ocean. The bone locked in the arm of a carving. Maui began to tug at the fish hook with every single muscle in his body. maui braced himself as the sea began to churn. Maui planted his feet firmly on the canoe. Hand over hand Maui hauled in the line. The fishes strength was not strong enough for Maui and the great fish began to floated to the surface. And what a fish it was. Maui told his brothers to not mess with the fish because it was nice and smooth. Then Maui went and got the fish hook but immediately when Maui was out of sight his brothers began to jab their spears into the massive fish. The great fish cried in agony as the spears hit it. In no time at all the fishes once smooth back was now a mass of valleys and ranges. The fish of Maui was now a uneven land. It is now called Te ika a Maui. the fish of maui is now the north island of new zealand.
